Cornflower Blue

You have to really get close to the cornflowers in my garden to admire the stunning cornflower blue flower heads. Florists love cornflowers for their dazzling colour that brightens up any bouquet. The colour seems to attract so many insects who spend their time just buzzing from one flower head to  another.

The insect on this cornflower flower head looked like an enamelled insect brooch which attracted my eye. If you click on the image to enlarge it you may see what I mean. The colours on him were so luminous, they seemed unreal. Maybe it was just the sunlight that created this effect. Indeed a very handsome bug, but what its called I have no idea.

The cornflower sometimes called the Bachelor’s button, Basket flower, Boutonniere flower was once used  to make the colour blue. Today it is more commonly used as an ingredient in some tea blends and herbal teas and in herbal remedies. It is also the national flower of Estonia.
