Spider

The last day in August turns out to be a glorious summers day which is a rare occurence this summer here in Essex where I live. If you saw my earlier posts about the local  Airshow you will notice that the weather nearly let us down. However, today was wonderful with long spells of warm sunshine so much needed after so many dreary days. The garden was the best place to be today. What caught my eye glistening in the sunshine was a big spiders web just by the door. Down came the spider from his hiding hole to catch an unwary little fly.  Having watched this for a short while  I decided it was an opportunity not to be missed and got the camera out. What was really intriguing was that I was watching the spider from underneath, and not looking down on his back.

Well I think its a garden spider, if anyone would like to correct me on this one please do. By the time the camera was in place this little spider had consumed his prey and looked like it was wrapping it up and then sort of pushed it out in a little ball. I am no nature freak but this episode was absolutely fascinating. Here is the photo I shot of this spider with my Nikon Coolpix. With the sun shining directly on the web the little ball here looks like a blue gemstone.

Red Arrows at Clacton Air Show

The flying program at the Clacton Airshow 2010 included the famous RAF aerobatic team, the Red Arrows. There is nothing quite so breathtaking as watching this display team whiz through the skies and perform their aerobatics.

Clacton Air Show 2010

The Claton Airshow still manged to attract loads of visitor this year despite the weather, although the numbers were slightly down on previous years. Each year the show attracts not only the aircraft hobbyists but also families with children. As the airshow is a free event it makes a great day out for all family, there’s always something for everyone. Airshow, sand, sea and funfair!

Clacton Airshow images

First day of the Clacton Airshow 2010  provided a great opportunity to take out the digital camera to shoot some pictures of the days proceedings.  Here are a couple of pictures taken of the Red Arrows aerobatics display on day one of the airshow.

Notice the heavy cloud and murky sea, not really the weather you expect in August.

All pictures were taken with a point and shoot digital camera, a Canon Powershot A560.

Clacton Airshow Day 2

Maybe just a slight improvement on the weather conditions for day 2 of the Clacton Airshow with some bright patches and a little bit of blue sky but not for long. The crowds again have gathered to watch the Red Arrows display at 12.30 today and the fly past.

First Day at the Airshow

Althougth the rest of  East Anglia suffered some torrential downpours, down here around the coast of Clacton the weather remained relatively good enough for the Claton Airshow 2010 to go ahead. The weather was by now means the best, but at least good enough for the gathered crowds to enjoy the flying displays.

Clacton Airshow

Today is the day of the actual Clacton Airshow, a 2 day annual event that takes place along the beach and greensward in Clacton, with a full air display taking place over the sea during the afternoon . An event that in 2009 drew over 100,000 visitors. This year is the 19th year of the show. Each year there is a full flying program of wing walkers, Battle of Britain planes and others and the biggest draw, a display by the aerobatics team of the Royal Aiforce the Red Arrows.

The weather here in August has not been very kind to all the holiday makers and today is no exception. With heavy clouds, wind and the constant threat of rain does not bode well for the air display this afternoon. We are all keeping our fingers tighly crossed and hoping for just a little break in the clouds with perhaps a little sun to brighten up the day.

Full Moon

After a day of very strong winds, heavy clouds, sunshine and showers as the night came we managed to get a peek of a full moon amongst the heavy clouds.

Taking a picture of the moon with a  digital camera is not such an easy task. It needs just a little preparation beforehand to get a reasonable shot.

Shooting at the Moon

In this instance the camera used is a Nikon Coolpix P90, a 12megapixel camera with a 24x Optical zoom. In order to use the zoom successfully I took note of Yorgo’s advice in his article and set up a tripod as well as using a timer.

Catching the moon without cloud cover was a game of patience, as well as dedication for it was pretty cold outside. Here is the result below.

Unfortunately the cloud cover was too dense  and the temperature outside too cold to sit around for too long outside in order to do shots with the other cameras. Something worth doing perhaps another night.

Using Lightroom and making a few adjustments you can dramatically change the look and the feel of any photograph. The photograph of the rainbow in Essex looks very different from the original after having a few adjustments made Lightroom.

Shooting at Rainbows in Essex

Someone forgot to tell the weather man that it is still August and that the days should be nice and warm with lots of sunshine every day, warm evenings and only occassional rain at night. So far this August we have had strong to gale force winds, thunderstorms, lots of heavy cloud most days, rain and even rainbows.

Driving home in Essex we managed to capture this picture of  a rainbow last night. The camera used was a Canon Powershot A560 with a  4x Optical zoom. Its a very easy to use point and shoot camera takes good, clear pictures even at speed in a moving car. Not one of the latest Canon point and shoot digital cameras, nevertheless the quality of the images is very good even in varying conditions.

Tonights Ycademy training call set exercise is to shoot at the moon. Hopefully here in Essex the clouds will part long enough to take a shot at the big sphere in the sky. If all goes well we will use the Canon Powershot  A560, the Nikon Coolpix P90 and the old Fuji Finepix to compare images.

Greek Church Stock Photo

Following upon the previous post, the Thursday Ycademy training session involved learning a few more Photoshop techniques in anticipation of the new Photo Media Stock site. We practiced  some new techniques on a photo of a Greek Church taken by Yorgo Nestoridis. Techniques were used to enhance the photo image: with a few simple adjustments certain features on the photo were enhanced.

Photo Media Stock Seminar

A new Photo Media Stock site will be opening its doors shortly, that is after the Photo Media Stock Seminar by Ycademy at the end of August. The site is brand new therefore there is much to prepare beforehand.

Gunfleet Sands Development

In one of my previous articles I mentioned the developmemt at Gunfleet Sands, about 4miles south-east off Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

Gunfleet Sands is one of the developments  undertaken by Dong, a company involved  in the offshore wind industry , to provide this part of Essex with green energy by tapping into the never ending supply of wind around this part of the coast.

Anyone who lives here around the the Thames estuary knows how much the wind blows around here almost every day of the year. Although we live a little inland we still overlook fields and the sea and today we noticed some new developments at Gunfleet Sands. As you can see a rig has appeared with a crane onboard.

Photo & Media Stock

The above photo is certainly not of the quality that will be required by the new Photo Stock Media site  to be released on the 1st September. Photo & Media Stock is a venture undertaken by Ycademy and the August Ycademy Online Seminar participants, to provide high quality, sharp and well focused  media stock photos.

Today the weather conditions were not the very best to take a good photograph, there was a slight mist on the horizon and the camera used was not the ideal one to take such long distance photoghraphs.

My Essex is a media driven project that was begun  in March 2010 during the March Ycademy Seminar as a demonstration site and still very much a work in progress. The site is based on the Semiomantics Evolution script developed by Yorgo Nestoridis.

Tropical Wings Zoo Animals

Tropical Wings Zoo in Essex has a wide variety of animals to watch and feed. Youngsters like my grandson just love to feed and feel the animals.

Arriving a little late in the day we were unable to see all the animals, but we still managed to see quite a few like  the tortoises, goats, meerkats, lemurs, rabbits, wallabies and last but not least the birds of prey display.

We will certainly be paying another visit to the Tropical Wings Zoo, perhaps in term time when there may be less crowds. The Zoo was certainly a major attraction in this part of Essex, the whole place heaving with children and adults. A real fun place for all the family.

We also visited The Butterfly Houseon the day, where you can walk  among the free flying Tropical Butterflies and watch and feed the koi carp in the large pool.

Tropical Wings Butterfly House

One of the first attractions one encounters at the zoo is ithe Butterfly House. When you first step inside it takes your breath away to see all the butterflies flying free in a warm tropical atmosphere among the vast array of tropcal plants. In the midst of all this is a large water area for carp just waiting to be fed. This was the best bit as far as my grandson was concerned, be could feed the fish and watch them fight for the food pellets.

Capturing images of the butterflies was not the easiest tasks as the butterflies flit from place to place and seemed often disturbed by the numerous visitors. It was a real honour and pleasure to see one or two land close by, close enough to quickly take a shot.

Tropical Wings

Tropical Wings is such a wonderful name for a zoo based in South Woodham Ferrers in Essex. providing a truly unique experience for any child, or adult for that matter, interested in wildlife. There is certainly a lot to see.

Tropical Wings Zoo is situated between Southend and Chelmsford and easy to  reach. As you enter the zoo you get the feeling that it is mainly aimed at children, and judging by my grandsons reaction the owners have done a good job. With the use of bright colours they have made the whole place very welcoming for children.

Tropical Wings is such a wonderful name for a zoo based in South Woodham Ferrers in Essex. providing a truly unique experience for any child, or adult for that matter, interested in wildlife. There is certainly a lot to see.

Tropical Wings Zoo

Tropical Wings Zoo is situated between Southend and Chelmsford in Essex. As you enter the zoo you get the feeling that it is mainly aimed at children, and judging by my grandsons reaction the owners have done a good job. Its pleasantly laid out with paths and walkways with a surprise around every corner. 

Tropical Wings Butterfly House

One of the first attractions one encounters at the zoo is the Butterfly House. When you first step inside it takes your breath away to see all the butterflies flying free in a warm tropical atmosphere among the vast array of tropical plants. In the midst of all this is a large water area for carp just waiting to be fed. This was the best bit as far as my grandson was concerned, be could feed the fish and watch them fight for the food pellets.

Capturing images of the butterflies was not one of  the easiest tasks as the butterflies flit from place to place and seemed often disturbed by the numerous visitors. It was a real honour and pleasure to see one or two land close by, close enough to quickly take a shot.

Hollow Trees Farm Images

We set of from home on our trip to Hollow Trees Farm in fine weather, by the time we got there it had started to drizzle. While getting out of the car the drizzle had turned to rain so we decided to sit it out in the Woodlad Cafe with a cup of coffee. Suddenly the heavens exploded, with a most unforseen thunderstorm. An hour later it was all over. The sky remained overcast but at least no rain.

Here are some images from the trip to Hollow Trees Farm. Although the day was gloomy as far as the weather was concerned my grandson thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Hollow Trees Farm

Hollow Trees Farm in Semer Suffolk provides a great day out for the whole family. A wonderful farm experience for all children. Our trip to the farm proved a great success with my grandson. Wandering round the farm trail we were able to capture some images and short videos of the animals with our digital camera. Now my grandson pesters me every day to open Oli’s Fun House on the computer so he can look at the pictures.

Hollow Trees Farm, Suffolk

Anyone who lives in the U.K.  or has ever visited the country knows about the English weather, it’s unreliable. Rarely two days are the same. When in the middle of the English summer the day is grey, overcast and a bit threatening its time to forget the beach and look for other ways to spend a summers day.  A wonderful place to visit and spend a few hours entertaining the children is Hollow Tree Farm in Suffolk.

Hollow Tree Farm is an environment friendly working farm in Suffolk that not only has a farm shop and coffee shop but also provides a farm trail around the farm for children to follow. There is so much to see on this trail- from kid goats, pigs  chickens, ducks, piglets and many more. You can spend 10minutes or a few hours wandering around enjoying the smells and sounds of a real working farm.
