Lilium superbum
Turks Cap Lily
We took a trip to Beth Chatto Gardens the other day. It was a glorious sunny day with a light breeze, time to go out and take a leisurely walk through these wondeful gardens with my camera. The gardens are a gardener’s and photographer’s paradise. There is always something there to catch the eye! What really caught my eye on this visit was the Turks Cap Lily, the amazing orange/red colour, glistening in the dappled sunlight near some trees.
Turks Cap Lily
I have seen the Turks Cap Lily before, but never seen such a beautiful specimen as this one. Turk’s cap lily (Lilium superbum) is really a native to North America, the eastern and central regions. It grows between 3-7ft in height ranging from about 5-40 flowers in exceptional specimens. I can’t imagine what a plant with so many blooms would look like, truly amazing I should think. The colours of the blooms do vary, ranging from this orange as you see in this photo to a deeper red and yellow. The flowers with their showy blooms attract a variety of insects and humming birds in their native land.
